You are covering football practice at inside of Mellencamp Pavillion at Indiana University when a 19 year old cornerback collapses to the floor. The patient is unconscious and unresponsive to verbal and physical stimulus. He has abnormal breathing and you can not find a pulse. You choose to use an AED to monitor the heart's rhythm.

What is an AED?
AED stands for automated external defibrillator. An AED is used when a patient begins to go into sudden cardiac arrest. This means that the heart unexpectedly and abruptly quits beating. This is normally caused by an abnormal heart rhythm called ventricular fibrillation.
